About the Book
Chasing Tides tells the story of my 1997 journey around Ireland by sea kayak — 1,500 kilometres travelled on a shoestring, with paper charts, radio forecasts and long before smartphones. Based largely on the diary I kept at the time, it follows the journey from the early days paddling with friends through to the long solo stretches around some of Ireland’s wildest coastline. It’s as much about the people, places and unexpected moments along the way as it is about the kayaking.
About Pat
Sea kayaking has been part of my life since I was a teenager. In 1997, I set out to paddle around Ireland, a journey of roughly 1,500 kilometres that became the story told in Chasing Tides.
I now live on Sherkin Island in West Cork, where the sea is still a big part of my life. The book grew out of the diary I kept during that journey and my desire to capture not just the kayaking, but the people, places and very different world of adventure travel before smartphones.
